Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity (BJKS) demanded fixing fares for CNG-run human hauler, laguna, auto-tempo, and auto-rickshaw to provide legal protection from the ongoing fare anarchy and harassment of passengers.

The BJKS came up with the demand in a letter sent to Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Monday.

The letter was signed by BJKS General Secretary Mohammad Mozammel Haque Chowdhury.

The government has only increased the fares of diesel-run buses, minibusses in view of the increase in the price of diesel, it said.

However, additional fares are being levied on all types of transport including CNG-run, petrol-run, octane-run buses-minibusses as well as human hauler, laguna, auto-tempo, auto-rickshaw, rickshaws, and motorcycles, it pointed out.

Members of the organisation's fare anarchy monitoring sub-committee on public transport and its leaders and staff across the country have observed the overall aspects of fare anarchy and passengers’ harassment, the BJKS letter said.

CNG-run human hauler, laguna, auto-tempo and auto-rickshaw are charging extra fare while they are running in major cities including Dhaka and Chittagram, it alleged.

According to the Road Transport Act 2018, the government has the power to fix the fares of all types of public transport, but it has not fixed the fares of those transports that are collecting the additional fare, it stated.

Passengers are being deprived of the opportunity to seek legal recourse even if they are financially becoming a loser due to lack of fare list, fixed by the government, it added.
