Mufti Amir Hamza arrested

The Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested Mufti Amir Hamza, described as an "extremist" Islamic speaker, on charges of spreading extremism using the name of religion.

He was arrested from a village under Islamic University Thana area in Kushtia on Monday, said CTTC Joint Commissioner Ilias Sharif, reports UNB.

He said they arrested a young man named Shakib from the Parliament area with a sword on May 5. The CTTC had information that Shakib was preparing to attack Parliament with the sword.

A case was filed with Sher-e-Banglanagar police under Terrorism Control Act recently.

Shakib gave a confessional statement before a Dhaka magistrate court.

Based on his statement, the CTTC arrested Mufti Hamza, he said
