Intense rainfall in most parts from Wednesday

People in the capital and most parts of the country are expected to see increased and intense rainfall from Wednesday as monsoon is fairly active over Bangladesh and moderate over North Bay, according to an official at the Met Office.

People are likely to witness the increased and intense rainfall in many parts of the country-- mainly in Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions-- and it may continue until August 20, Aftab Uddin, a meteorologist at Bangladesh Meteorological Department told the Financial Express.

In its 72-hour outlook, a 24-hour bulletin on Monday said rainfall activity may increase at the end period.

However, the rainfall may decrease after August 20, the meteorologist said.

Light to moderate rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at many places over Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions and at a few places over Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions with moderately heavy to heavy falls at places over the country, the Met Office bulletin said.

Bhola recorded the highest 61 millimetres (mm) rainfall until Monday morning, the forecast said.

The axis of monsoon trough runs through Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal to Assam across northern part of Bangladesh. One of its associated troughs extends up to North Bay, it said.

A low-pressure area is likely to form over Northwest Bay and adjoining Westcentral Bay during the next 24 hours, the bulletin said.

Day and night temperatures may remain nearly unchanged over the country, it added.
