Indian foreign secretary in city on three-day visit

The new Indian foreign secretary, Vijay Gokhale, has arrived in Dhaka for a three-day visit.

This is his first visit since his appointment on Jan 29.

His Bangladeshi counterpart Md Shahidul Haque received him at the airport at 4:30pm on Sunday.

The Indian foreign secretaries traditionally visit each of India’s neighbouring countries after assuming the office.

Gokhale is scheduled for bilateral talks with Haque on Monday. Some MOUs are expected to be signed. He will also speak at a seminar on India-Bangladesh relations.

He will also meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali.

The foreign secretary is scheduled to leave on the morning of Apr 10.

Gokhale, an Indian Foreign Service Officer of the batch of 1981, was secretary (economic relations) at the foreign ministry before his appointment to his current post, reports bdnews24.com.
