Imran H Sarker faces another arrest warrant

A Dhaka court has issued an arrest warrant for Ganajagaran Mancha spokesperson Imran H Sarker in a case relating to allegedly defaming the prime minister during a protest in Dhaka city.

The warrant follows Sarker’s failure to appear in court for the indictment hearing on Thursday, according to agencies.

Ganajagaran Mancha activist Sanatan Ullash, who was also accused in the case, was granted more time by the first additional chief magistrate.

The same court had ordered arrests against Sarker and Ullash on Sept 20 after they failed to attend a hearing. The next day, they surrendered and got bail. The judge then set the indictment hearing date.

Sarker and Ullash are accused of making derogatory comments on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a case started by Golam Rabbani, a leader of Chhatra League, on May 31, reports bdnews24.com.

The allegation stemmed from a slogan chanted against Hasina from a rally to protest the removal of the Lady Justice statue from the Supreme Court premises.

Sarker headed the protest rally at Dhaka’s Shahbagh on May 28.

The derogatory comments on the prime minister offended Rabbani who believes in the ideologies of Awami League and its founder Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, according to the case details.
