Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque directed the police members not to check the documents of trucks and covered vans on highways so that goods transportation remain undisrupted.

The top police official suggested to scrutinise the documents at terminals before or after their journeys.

The IGP came up with the directions at a meeting with the leaders of Bangladesh Truck, Covered-van and Truck Lorry Malik Sramik Oikya Parishad and Bangladesh Truck Covered-van Goods Transport Association at the conference room of the Police Headquarters on Saturday.

Shahidul Hoque said law enforcers will face stern action if any allegation is found against them.

According to UNB, the IGP urged the owner-worker leaders not to run vehicles without fitness and valid papers to keep the highways free from traffic congestions and safe from accidents.

He also asked them to carry the products of certain weights in their vehicles and refrain from using hydraulic horns, which is harmful to public health. The IGP also urged the leaders to follow the traffic rules.

He urged the transport owners and workers to solve the problem by strengthening community police in the transport sector.

The owners and workers alleged that drivers are harassed on the highways by law enforcers in addition to filing cases against their vehicles despite having valid documents.
