Bangladesh Documentary Filmmakers Association, on Saturday, organised a human chain at Shahbagh in Dhaka demanding the release of Japanese journalist and filmmaker Toru Kubota, who was jailed by Myanmar government.
Myanmar military junta sentenced a young Japanese journalist and filmmaker Toru Kubota to 10 years in prison in a farcical trial recently.
Since taking power by illegally removing the democratic government, Myanmar's military has been arrested thousands of citizens including politicians, bureaucrats, students, journalists and foreigners who are vocal against them.
In the same manner, Toru Kubota, a young independent media activist, was sentenced for violating the so-called Sedition and Communications Act.
Toru Kubota, 26 years old, was arrested last July at a protest rally in Yangon, Myanmar and later faced charges of violating immigration laws and encouraging dissent against the ruling military.
Addressing the human chain, President of Bangladesh Documentary Filmmakers Association Masud Karim said, today the right to free speech and free thinking is under threat all over the world.
“We strongly protest the farcical trial and imprisonment of this young free-thinking media activist and filmmaker, Toru Kubota. I also demand his immediate release” he added.
The Association will give a memorandum to the Myanmar Embassy in Dhaka through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh demanding immediate release of Kubota.
