HRD, green projects essential to ensure progress: Wahiduddin

Eminent economist Dr Wahiduddin Mahmud has stressed the importance of human resource development for the overall progress of any country, especially Bangladesh.

He also expressed cautions against taking up development projects that devastate the environment.

Dr Wahiduddin came up with the remark while presiding over launching of a book titled 'Agamidiner Bangladesh' (Future Bangladesh) organised by Banglar Pathshala Foundation at the Jatiya Press Club (JPC) on Tuesday.

To develop any country, especially a country like Bangladesh, development of human resources, not the development of elitists, is needed for the development of masses, said the economist. He further added that accountability, good governance, technological development and skill development are also important for the country's overall progress.

A long-term planning to reach the desired development through a realistic way is a big challenge for Bangladesh, he observed, reports UNB.

The book 'Agamidiner Bangladesh' contains articles by experts of different disciplines which were discussed on January 12 in 2017 in a symposium. The symposium was arranged to talk on recently published 10 books focusing development related issues of Bangladesh by prominent economist Dr Nazrul Islam.

Dr Nazrul Islam, also present in the programme, said that an overall turnaround is needed to bring changes in development sector as the discrimination between rich and poor in the society is increasing day by day.

Mentioning that the country is not going through a balanced urbanisation, Nazrul spoke of wide differences between rural areas and the capital city.

MM Akash, who teaches Economics at Dhaka University, also spoke on the occasion, among others.
