Holy month of Ramadan starts Tuesday

The holy month of Ramadan will begin on Tuesday as the national moon-sighting committee has announced the sighting of the Ramadan crescent moon in the sky of Bangladesh.

Muslims in Bangladesh will start saying their Tarabih prayers on Monday night, have their Sehri on early Tuesday and they will start month-long fasting for self-purification from Tuesday, report bdnews24.com and UNB.

State Minister for Religious Affairs Sheikh Md Abdullah chaired a meeting of the committee at Islamic Foundation's Baitul Mukarram office that made the decision on Monday.

Reports of moon-sighting were received from several parts of the country, according to the state minister.

Lailatul Qadr, the night of divine blessing and benediction, will be observed on the night of June 1.

Muslims in Middle Eastern countries such as Saudi Arabia began fasting a day earlier.

Muslims are meant to fast from dawn to dusk during the lunar month, a time of restraint and austerity.

During the holy month, all government, semi-government, autonomous and semi-autonomous institutions will follow new office timing as announced by the government.

All these offices will remain open from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm with a 15-minute Zohr prayer break from 1:15 pm to 1:30 pm during the month.
