Holy Ashura observed

Holy Ashura, commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), was observed across the country on Sunday with due religious fervour and solemnity.

On this day in Hijri 61, Hazrat Imam, the grandson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH), along with his family members and 72 followers embraced the martyrdom in the hands of Yazid's soldiers at the desert of Karbala to uphold the teachings of the Prophet (SM).

The day was a public holiday.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages on the occasion.

Shia community members brought out several Tazia processions in Dhaka and others cities today marking the day.

The biggest Tajia procession started from Imambara Husaini Dalan in Old Dhaka with police escort.

Adequate security measures were taken around Imambara Husaini Dalan to ensure smooth observance of Holy Ashura.

Apart from Husaini Dalan, police were deployed on the rooftops on some buildings at some major points of Imambara for security reasons.

Security was also provided in some major places in Imambara where the Shia community gathered to mark the day.

Meanwhile, police imposed a ban on carrying lethal weapons like metal weapons, knife, sword and other sharp weapons during Tajia procession.

Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Television and private TV channels were airing special programmes on Sunday highlighting the significance of the day.
