Fishermen resumed catching hilsa from Thursday as a 22-day ban on the same ended the previous day.

The government imposed a ban on catching hilsa during the period from October 14 to November 4.

A high official of the fisheries and livestock ministry told the FE on Thursday that 36 district and upazila administrations and fisheries officials along with law enforcement agencies had carried out drives against catching, marketing, selling and transportation of hilsa fish during the ban.

Besides, several raids were conducted against selling of hilsa fish at wholesale markets and superstores in the capital during the ban.

The government imposes ban on catching hilsa as per the existing law to facilitate hilsa breeding during this time.

The existing law on protection and preservation of hilsa and other fishes has the provision of sentencing people to two years in jail or a fine of Tk 5,000 if anyone breaks the law.

During the ban, the government's monitoring teams or mobile courts seized current nets worth over Tk 2.15 billion and about 40 tonnes of hilsa.

The courts also meted out punishment to more than 4,500 persons for allegedly trying to catch hilsa defying the ban.
