Hilsa fishing banned in Laxmipur for two months

The government has imposed a two-month ban on catching, selling, hoarding and transporting of Hilsa from March 1 to April 30 to protect the mother fish and jatka.

The ban is effective on a 100km stretch of Meghna River from Ramgati's CharAlexander to Shatnol.

From March to June, some 42,000 registered fishermen will receive 40 kilograms of food aid each.

District Fisheries Officer Md HM Mohib Ullah said the area sees an abundance of jatka during this period.

Regular drives will be conducted by fisheries office and district taskforce, police, and Coast Guard to prevent Hilsa fishing, reports UNB.

"Those who will violate the ban will face legal action," the fisheries official said.
