High Court orders Tk 10m compensation over child’s death after wall collapse

The High Court on Tuesday issued a rule upon the concerned bodies of the government to explain in four weeks as to why they should not be directed to give Tk 10 million compensation to the family of seven-year-old schoolboy Zihad Hossain who was killed after a wall collapsed on him in the capital’s Azimpur area on November 9.

The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed by a rights organization, Ain-Odhikar (BD) Foundation, and Zihad’s father Nazir Hossain seeking necessary directives for compensation.

Lawyer Manir Hossain Hawlader appeared for the petitioners, while Deputy Attorney General Bepul Bagmar represented the state.

Zihad met the tragic end of his life around 8:15 am on November 9 this year while going to his school, around 2 km away from his home, on foot accompanied by his father Nazir Hossain.

A boundary wall of the Azimpur Government Officers' Quarter (south zone) fell on him as he reached the area, leaving him critically injured.

He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead, said Nazir, who also sustained minor injuries on his leg in the incident.

Locals alleged that the 30-year-old wall collapsed due to sheer negligence of the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) authorities.
