High Court orders emergency steps against mosquito menace at Dhaka airport

The High Court has ordered the concerned bodies of the government to take necessary steps on an emergency basis to curb mosquito menace at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.

The court asked the chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) and other respondents to comply with the order and submit a report in the court regarding the steps taken by the authority within 10 days.

The High Court bench of Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Fatema Najib passed the order on Sunday after hearing a supplementary writ petition filed by Supreme Court lawyer Tanvir Ahmed seeking its directive on the respondents to take immediate steps for tackling the mosquito menace at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

Another High Court bench headed by Justice F R M Nazmul Ahasan on March 12 in 2019 had issued a rule asking the respondents to explain in four weeks as to why their inaction to kill mosquitoes in Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and its surrounding areas should not be declared illegal.

In the rule, the HC also asked the authorities to show cause as to why they should not be directed to take urgent steps to tackle the mosquito menace there.

Secretary to the ministry of civil aviation and tourism, chairman of Bangladesh Civil Aviation Authority, mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation and councillor of the ward concerned of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport were made respondents to the rule.

Mr Tanvir said he filed the supplementary petition recently annexing a published report stating that mosquito infestation has been increased again in Shahjalal Airport. After hearing the petition the court passed the order on Sunday.

Lawyer Tanvir Ahmed appeared in the court hearing in support of his petition, while deputy attorney general Tushar Kanti Roy represented the state.
