A depression over the Bay of Bengal was causing heavy rainfall over areas in Bangladesh.

Under its influence, heavy to very heavy downpours are expected over Khulna, Chittagong, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh and Rangpur divisions throughout Friday.

It became a land depression after it moved northwest over Odisha in India's east coast at 6:00am, according to the Met Office's special weather bulletin, reports bdnews24.com.

Martime ports in Chittagong, Cox's Bazar, Mongla, and Payra have been advised to hoist Local Cautionary Signal No 3.

"It is likely to move in a north/northeasterly direction further and weaken gradually," said the Met Office in its Friday forecast.

The low-lying areas of the coastal districts of Cox's Bazar, Chittagong, Noakhali, Lakshmipur, Feni, Chandpur, Bhola, Barisal, Patuakhali, Jhalokathi, Pirojpur, Borguna, Bagerhat, Khulna, and Satkhira may experience wind driven surge up to two feet above normal tide.
