Heart attacks, brain strokes major causes of 2020 deaths in Bangladesh

Heart attacks, heart related diseases and brain strokes remained top causes of deaths in 2020, according to Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).

Over 0.18 million people died of heart attacks alone in 2020 followed by deaths of 85,360 people due to brain strokes last year.

Around 0.14 million people died of heart attacks in 2019.

The number of deaths caused by heart diseases reduced in 2020 compared to that of 2019. The number was 67,007 in 2019 which fell to 43,204 in 2020.

The number of deaths from heart attacks was around 22 times Covid related deaths in 2020.

The number of deaths from brain strokes almost doubled in 2020 compared to 2019. As many as 85,360 people died of brain strokes against 45,502 in 2019.

Asthma dominated in 2019 compared to that of 2020. The number of people died of asthma in 2019 was 38,290 which fell to 32,075 in 2020.

The number of deaths from cancer and diabetes also rose in 2020. In 2019, 22,030 people died of diabetes which rose to 25,006 in 2020. As many as 1,180 people died of breast cancer which rose to 3,011 in 2020. In 2019, 3,541 people died of brain cancer which rose to 5,237 in 2020.

These were revealed at a dissemination programme at Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics office in the city on Wednesday.

In 2019, a total of 0.82 million people died which increased to 0.85 million in 2020.

Project Director Ashraful Islam said data were collected from 0.29 million households of 2012 sample areas of the country. The report was prepared based on real time data.

The final report will be published in June, Mr Islam mentioned.
