HC stays ministry order to remove Zia’s name from titles of two schools

The High Court (HC) on Monday halted the education ministry's decision for six months to remove the name of late president Ziaur Rahman from the titles of two high schools in Bogura--Shahid Ziaur Rahman Girls' High School and Gabtali Shahid Zia High School.

The HC bench of Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Md Khairul Alam passed the order.

On April 19, 2020 in an official order, the education ministry changed the name of Gabtali Shahid Zia High School to Gabtali Purba Para High School. The ministry altered the title of Shahid Ziaur Rahman Girls’ High School to Sukhanpukur Bondor Girls’ High School.

Talking to The Financial Express, Deputy Attorney General Tushar Kanti Roy said the government is yet to take any decision immediately to file any appeal before the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court against the HC directives.

The HC bench also passed two separate rules asking the education ministry to explain in four weeks why they should not be directed to reinstate the name of Ziaur Rahman to titles of the schools.

Earlier, two Supreme Court lawyers Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal and Khaled Mahbubur Rahman filed the two separate writ petitions challenging the legality of the ministry's decision.
