HC stays Gazipur city polls for six months

The High Court has stayed the Gazipur City Corporation elections for six months after hearing a petition against redistricting in the area.

The decision by Justice Naima Haider and Justice Zafar Ahmed came on Sunday, only nine days before the polls.

The Election Commission had been preparing to hold the elections on May 15. Candidates from all the major parties had already begun their campaigns.

On Jan 16, 2013 the EC issued a gazette incorporating six administrative districts (mouzas) into the Gazipur City Corporation’s coverage.

On Sunday Shimulia-1 Union Chairman ABM Azharul Islam Suroj filed a petition challenging the gazette.

The High Court heard the petition and stayed the election for six months, says a bdnews24 report.

Earlier, Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda had announced the election schedule for Gazipur and Khulna city corporations on March 31, according to UNB.
