Explain water contamination in four zones, HC asks WASA

The High Court today asked Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority to give a written explanation on the latter-supplied contaminated water in four zones, out of 10, in Dhaka.

The bench of Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Md Khairul Alam passed the order after getting a government report on the WASA water.

The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development placed the report before the court via the attorney general's office.

According to the report, the WASA water in four zones, out of 10, contains arsenic, chlorine, E. coli and ammonia.

The LGRD ministry made the report after testing samples of water collected from 34 areas in 10 WASA zones and had them tested at the laboratories of three renowned institutions.

The renowned laboratories belonged to Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Dhaka University and International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Re-search, Bangladesh, local media reported.

Earlier on May 21, after hearing a writ petition, the same bench directed the relevant ministry to test WASA-supplied water in 34 areas.

The court also ordered that WASA pay Tk 0.17 million to a LGRD ministry-formed committee and the ministry submit the report before it.
