The High Court (HC) on Sunday rejected a writ petition against Bangla daily Prothom Alo over using the word “Saangsod” instead of “Songsod Sodosso” before the names of parliamentarians on the newspaper.
Considering that the petition was not placed before the court appropriately, the HC bench of Justice Md Mozibur Rahman Miah and Justice Khizir Hayat passed the order.
Supreme Court lawyer Mustafizur Rahman Khan, who stood on behalf of the Prothom Alo, told the HC bench that the newspaper did not use the word "Saangsod" before the names of Members of Parliament.
On behalf of Law and Life Foundation, a rights organisation, Mohammad Humayun Kabir Pallob, Mohammed Kawsar and Md Majedul Kader, who are three Supreme Court lawyers, submitted the petition before the HC as the public interest litigation.
The petitioner in the writ petition had prayed to the HC to pass an order against the government along with Prothom Alo to refrain from using the word “Saangsod” before the name of MP as it violates Bangladesh’s constitution.
The article 65 of the constitution said “Parliament shall consist of three hundred members to be elected in accordance with law from single territorial constituencies by direct election and, for so long as clause (3) is effective, the members provided for in that clause; the members shall be designated as Members of Parliament”.
