The High Court has questioned the legality of the government’s reconstitution action of the Board of Trustees of Manarat International University.
The court asked the government to explain in four weeks why its action to reconstitute the Board of Trustees of Manarat International University should not be declared illegal.
The HC bench of Justice Zafar Ahmed and Justice Md Akhtaruzzaman passed the order on Monday after hearing a writ petition filed challenging the legality of government steps to reconstitute the trustee board of the university.
Government on September 8 of this year reconstituted Manarat International University's board of trustees, abolishing the previous one, due to an allegation that some of the immediate-past members were involved in ‘militancy and anti-state activities.
The education ministry reconstituted the board in a meeting held on the day, deducting all the 11 members of the previous board.
Later on September 12, eight members of the previous board filed a writ petition challenging the government's action. After hearing the petition the HC bench passed the order.
Lawyers AJ Mohammad Ali and Jamiul Haque Faisal appeared for the petitioner during the hearing of the petition.
Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam was made chairman of the university's new 13-member board of trustees.
