HC pledges interference in case of negligence in Nusrat murder probe

The High Court has vowed to interfere in the event of any negligence in the investigation into the murder of Feni madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi.

The HC bench of Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Razik-Al-Jalil came up with the vow upon a prayer seeking suo moto directive for conducting a judicial inquiry into the incident.

Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Syed Sayedul Haque Suman, who filed the prayer, produced some newspaper report before the bench to bring the sensationality of the case home.

In the plea, he said the incident has triggered protests across the country and it warrants a judicial inquiry into the case to identify and punish the perpetrators.

The court pointed out that the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) is already investigating the incident and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is also concerned about this, local media reported.

It urged all concerned to be careful to make it sure that the murder of Nusrat is not forgotten like those of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Run, Sohagi Jahan Tonu and Mahmuda Khanam Mitu.

Madrasa student Nusrat succumbed to her injuries at the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital on Friday after battling death for five days.

For refusing to withdraw a complaint accusing Feni’s Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa principal Siraj ud-Daulah of sexual harassment, a group of burqa-clad youths, believed to be his stooges, set Nusrat on fire, leaving her critically injured, on April 6.
