HC orders judicial probe into lawyer’s death in jail

The High Court (HC) on Wednesday ordered conducting a judicial investigation into the death of a lawyer after being burnt in Panchagarh jail.

The court also ordered conducting the investigation by a judicial magistrate under the supervision of Chief Judicial Magistrate and submitting the report within 30 days, reports UNB.

Panchagarh Deputy Commissioner, superintendent of jail and police superintendent have been asked to assist the Judicial Magistrate in the investigation. The HC fixed June 23 for next hearing in the case.

A bench of Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Razik-Al-Jalil passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed by Barrister Sayedul Haque Sumon.

The court also issued a rule seeking explanation from the authorities concerned as to why the failure of providing security to a prisoner in jail should not be declared illegal.

Barrister Sayedul Haque Sumon stood for the petitioner while Deputy Attorney Genral Mokhlesur Rahman represented the state.

Barrister Sayedul Haque Sumon said Palash Kumar Roy, son of Pranab Kumar Roy of Atwari upazila, was a lawyer of Dhaka Bar Association. He was in jail in a defamation case.

On April 26, Palash was set on fire using patrol or kerosene in the jail and later he succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, he said.

Palash was sent to jail as he allegedly made defamatory remarks about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on March 25 in a human chain programme.
