HC issues rule over compensation to Jhalakathi launch fire victims

The High Court (HC) has asked the district administrations to provide necessary financial assistance of the victims over the devastating fire on the MV Abhijan-10 launch and also sought the list of them both killed and injured in the incident.

The deadly fire killed at least 38 people on board the vessel in the Jhalakathi district in the wee hours of Friday.

The court said, “The required financial support should be given to the victims of the fire incident if they seek the assistance through the application”.

The HC bench comprising Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman on Tuesday passed the rule after the two separate writ petitions were filed to the court.

Supreme Court lawyers Saumitra Sarder and Md Eunus Ali Akond filed separate writ petitions seeking necessary directives.

Contacted, Md Eunus Ali Akond said the HC also asked the shipping ministry and Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) to submit the probe reports on the deadly fire incident to it by 30 days.

The HC also directed the ministry and BIWTA to submit reports within 90 days on the fitness of launches and ships running throughout the country, he told The Financial Express.
