HC issues injunction to prevent earth-filling at Purbachal Marine City

The High Court on Sunday issued an injunction to prevent earth-filling activities by the Purbachal Marine City authorities in 2500 bigha land at Doudpur Union Parishad in Rupganj Upazila of Narayanganj district for three months.

Deputy Commissioner of Narayanganj, Rupganj’s Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), AC Land and Sub-Registrar have been asked to comply with the injunction order.

The court also asked the Narayanganj DC and the Deputy Director of the District Social Service Office to investigate the allegation of grabbing arable land, water bodies, homesteads and forests by the Purbachal Marine City and to submit a report to the court within 60 days.

The High Court bench of Justice Md Mozibur Rahman Miah and Justice Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed by AKM Tamijuddin Raj and 11 others on August 10.

The court also issued a rule asking the concerned government bodies to explain in four weeks why the inaction of the respondents to stop illegal earth-filling activities should not be declared illegal.

In the ruling, it also wanted to know why the respondents should not be directed to recover the arable land, water bodies, homesteads and forests already grabbed by the Purbachal Marine City authorities.

Land Secretary, Housing and Public Works Secretary, Local Government Secretary, Environment Secretary, RAJUK Chairman, Deputy Commissioner of Narayanganj, Rupganj’s Upazila Nirbahi Officer, AC Land and Sub-Registrar, Managing Director of the Marine Group of Companies and other respondents have been asked to comply with the rule.

Barrister Mahin M Rahman appeared in the court hearing on behalf of the writ petitioners, while Assistant Attorney General Mohammad Abbas Uddin represented the state.
