Hasina, Modi inaugurate Chilahati-Holdibari rail link

Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi inaugurated the Chilahati-Haldibari rail link on Thursday. Chilahati is in Bangladesh’s Nilphamari and Haldibari in India’s West Bengal.

The prime ministers of the two countries inaugurated the rail link during their virtual summit that started at 11:30am.

In their inaugural speeches, both Hasina and Modi reiterated firm commitment to further promoting the ties between the two countries.

Modi lauded the Bangladesh premier for her successful handling of the pandemic situation.

As for Covid-19 vaccine, he said his country will take steps to provide it to Bangladesh once it is available.

The Indian prime minister termed Bangladesh a 'major pillar' in his country’s neighbourhood policy.

In her speech, Hasina paid homage to the Indian soldiers who had sacrificed their lives during the liberation war of Bangladesh against Pakistan.

Meanwhile, prior to the summit, both countries signed seven memoranda of understanding on hydrocarbon, wild elephant preservation, agriculture, Bangabandhu museum, environment, and establishing CEO forum in textiles.
