Hailstorms damage crops, houses in parts of country

Hailstorms leave behind a trail of destruction on a onion field in Kushtia in the early morning of Sunday

Heavy rainfall, coupled with hailstorms and gusty winds, have immensely damaged Rabi crops in different parts of the country.

A large number of mango buds also fell off during the storm in the early morning of Sunday in Puthia, Godagari, Tanor, Poba, Charghat and Bagha upazilas of Rajshahi.

Many trees collapsed in Rajshahi University area.

Deputy Director of Rajshahi Agriculture Extension Department Shamsul Haque said some 2182 hectares of land with Rabi crops, like onion, garlic, wheat, were hugely damaged in the district.

Of all upazilas of the district, Puthia witnessed the highest damage due to the storm, he said.

Chief Scientific Officer at Rajshahi Fruit Research Centre Abdul Alim said mangoes scrape through the inclement weather and so there is nothing to be disappointed about due to huge damage to mango buds in the storm.

In Kushtia also, onion, garlic, maize, wheat and oilseeds were heavily damaged.

Deputy Director of Kushtia Agricultural Extension Department Bibhutibhushan Sarker estimated the damage to be at least 30 hectares of Rabi crops.

Many of the kutcha and semi-kutcha houses in Netrokona’ Kendua upazila were also ravaged.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Al Imran Ruhul Islam said, “Thirty-eight kutcha and semi-kutcha houses were heavily damaged at Dalpa and Ramnagar villages under Dalpa Union in Kendua upazila o Sunday morning.”
