Two suspected robbers were killed in separate gunfights in Laxmipur and Rajshahi districts on Friday.
In Laxmipur, an alleged robber—Nurul Alam alias Nuru, son of Samsuddoha of East Zafarpur village in Sadar upazila—was killed in gunfight with police at Chandraganj Ganipur in Sadar upazila before dawn.
Zafar Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Chandraganj Police Station, said a team of police conducted a drive in the area around 3:30 am after having confirmation from a source that a group of robbers gathered in the area for committing robberies.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the robbers opened fire on the police, prompting them to fire back which triggered a gunfight.
At one stage, Nuru died in the gunfight while the others managed to flee the scene.
Two policemen-Rafikullah and Rubel-were injured in the incident, claimed police.
Nuru was a top listed robber and wanted in six cases, the OC added.
One LG gun, one gun and five bullets were recovered from the spot, reports UNB.
In Rajshahi, a suspected robber was killed in a 'gunfight' between his cohorts and members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Charghat upazila shortly after midnight.
Tipped off that some robbers were preparing to commit robberies, a team of the elite force conducted a drive at Hazir Dhalan Beel around 12:30 am, said deputy commander of RAB-5, Major Ashraful Islam.
Sensing the presence of the RAB team, the robbers opened fire on them prompting them to retaliate that triggered a gunfight.
After a brief gunfight, the RAB members arrested a robber as he suffered bullet wounds while the others managed to flee the spot.
Later, he was taken to Charghat Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.
Four RAB members were injured in the incident.
One firearm and some sharp weapons and bullets were recovered from the spot.
