Govt working for CHT development: Secretary

Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) Affairs Ministry Secretary Md Nurul Amin on Tuesday said that the government wants to make sure all children in the CHT region get education.

He made the remark while speaking at the 'National Stakeholder Workshop' held under the South Asia Food and Nutrition Security Initiative (SAFANSI) project at Spectra convention centre in the city.

The workshop was organised by Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF) with supports from the World Bank.

Mentioning that Bangabandhu had great sincerity about Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT), the Secretary said that Bangbandhu's daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina brought peace to this area by striking the CHT Peace Accord on December 2, 1997, reports UNB.

"Government has taken initiatives to bring forward CHT including development works like road, culvert and bridge construction, solving land problems, providing technical education, establishing Rangamati Medical College and an Engineering University and so on", he said.

Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Ministry has been working for long time to ensure food and health security of CHT people. The mortality rate of CHT pregnant mother is now less than national average, he further said.

National Institute of Population Research and Training (NIPORT) Director General Nimai Chandra Paul, President of Obstetrical and Gynecological Society of Bangladesh Dr Sameena Chowdhury and MJF Executive Director Shaheen Anam also spoke at the programme.
