Authorities on Friday restored the 3G and 4G mobile phone network and internet services at the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar.
“The services resumed today after it was suspended a year and a half ago,” officials confirm FE.
A government taskforce on Wednesday sent a letter to the post and telecommunication ministry that implemented the decision through Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).
“The 3G and 4G mobile network and internet services have been restored on Friday upon government’s direction”, said Bangladesh’s Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC) Md Mahbub Alam Talukder.
In September 2019, authorities imposed a ban on the use of 3G and 4G SIM cards and the internet at the refugee camps on security grounds.
However, the local and international rights groups, UN agencies and Rohingya refugees repeatedly demanded that the services be restored on humanitarian ground.
