The government will formulate a new law for ensuring professional security of physicians as they often face difficulties in their workplaces.
Health Minister Mohammed Nasim came up with the statement while addressing the joining function of 180 newly appointed doctors under the 36th BCS examinations, reports BSS.
The minister said, “We are thinking to formulate an act to safeguard our doctors so that they could be protected from public harassment."
"Doctors are directly linked to the country’s healthcare sector,” he added.
Nasim said the government has already approved a proposal to build four new government medical colleges in Magura, Naogaon, Nilphamari and Netrakona districts.
“The present government is committed to reaching the healthcare services at district level. That’s why we have a plan to establish medical colleges in every district,” he said.
According to the ministry, there are 31 state-run medical colleges in the country. With the four new medical colleges, the number of government medical colleges will stand at 35.
The Health Minister also announced a plan to recruit 7,000 doctors by November this year.
“The doctors will be posted to upazila level, where they have to serve for at least three years,” he said.
State Minister for Health Zahid Maleque, Health Services Division Secretary Md Serajul Huq Khan, Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) President Dr Mustafa Jalal Mohiuddin, Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad (SWACHIP) Secretary General Dr Mohammad Abdul Aziz and SWACHIP President Prof Dr M Iqbal Arslan also spoke at the function.
