Govt planning to build Mujib Kellas in Gaibandha

The government has taken up an initiative to build multi-storeyed Mujib Kellas in the Brahmaputra river basin of four upazilas in Gainbandha district to reduce disaster risks caused by floods.

This was disclosed by deputy commissioner (DC) Gautam Chandra Pal in an emergency meeting of district disaster management committee at his conference room in Gainbandha on Tuesday.

District administration and district relief and rehabilitation office jointly arranged the meeting aimed on how to face the floods without huge losses and damages, sources said.

DC Gautam Chandra Pal said the flood affected char people of Sundarganj, Sadar, Fulchhari and Shaghata upazilas would take shelter at nearby modern Mujib Kellas until the flood water removed or the flood situation improved in the chars.

An arrangement would also consist of rooms to keep domestic animals like cow, goat, sheep and poultry birds at the ground floor of the kellas to save them from the floods, the DC added.

All the members of the committee welcomed the plan of the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

They also urged the government for quick implementation of the plan to help the flood hit char inhabitants minimise their sufferings due to natural calamity through building the structure at nearby river basin areas of the upazilas, reports BSS.

Police super Engineer Abdul Mannan Miah, additional deputy commissioner (General) Muhammad Mizanur Rahman, district relief and rehabilitation officer AKM Idris Ali and journalist Sarker M Shahiduzzaman attended the meeting, among others.
