Govt moves to rehabilitate beggars

The government has launched an initiative to rehabilitate beggars aiming to eliminate begging across the country.

State Minister for Textile and Jute Mirza Azam made the disclosure while speaking as the chief guest at a meeting in Jamalpur on Saturday.

“Begging should be stopped and the beggars should be rehabilitated,” he said.

Azam said the government under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has done various development works for alleviating poverty in the country, reports BSS.

Chaired by Deputy Commissioner of the district Ahmed Kabir, the meeting was addressed, among others, by Deputy Director of Local Government Division Khandakar Mohammad Abdullah Al Mahmud, Additional Superintendent of Police Wares Ali Miah, Mayor of Jamalpur Municipality Mirza Sakhawatul Alam Moni, Vice-President of District Awami League Syed Atiqur Rahman Sana and former Deputy Commander of Jamalpur Muktijodha Sangsad Sujat Ali Fakir.

Later, Azam distributed various livelihood supports, including rickshaw and essential commodities, among the rehabilitated beggars of Jamalpur sadar and Melandaha upazilas.
