Cox's Bazar district administration has imposed a week-long 'relief interval' by NGO's involved in distribution of aid to Rohingya refugees at Ukhia and Teknaf upazilas.
According to sources, district administration issued a circular on Monday that the quantity of food and non-food items being distributed by the NGO's among the refugees is more than their needs.
As a result, they have a surplus of food items, which may be wasted.
On the other hand, it is learnt that most of the Rohingya refugees selling their surplus food items and non-food relief materials to the local people at very low price.
To stop the waste of relief materials all NGO's have been asked to halt their relief activities for one week from December 11 to 17 said the circular.
However, the NGO's working under the UNHCR will remain out of this ban, Deputy Commissioner of Cox's Bazar Mohammed Ali Hossain said.
According to sources, the Rohingya refugees have received huge quantity of relief goods from different local and international NGO's in the camps. At present they have huge rice, dal, sugar, soyabean oil, powdered milk, various dried foods and clothes more than their needs. Most of the refugees are selling their surplus relief goods at low price to the locals.
On the other hand biometric registration of 7,73,226 Rohingya refugees completed till last week in 7 camps out of 12 refugee camps of Ukhia and Teknaf upazilas of the district.
Total number of new arrival Rohingyas after August 25 stands at 6,36,670 Cox's Bazar district administration sources said.
