Govt hires private company to salvage sunken ferry at Paturia

The government picked on Sunday a private company for salvaging the sunken ro-ro ferry Amanat Shah at Paturia ferry ghat in Manikganj.

A high official of the Ministry of Shipping (MoS) said the decision to pick the private company was taken at a meeting of the ministry on the day for rescuing the ferry.

"A meeting at the Ministry of Shipping (MoS) decided to engage a private company in salvaging the sunken ferry Amanat Shah," chairman of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) Commodore Golam Sadeq told the FE.

He said the private entity started carrying out a survey at the site of the ferry accident at Paturia ferry ghat in Manikganj on Sunday.

After the survey ends, it will start the salvage operation.

Talking to the FE, an official of the MoS said the private company named Genuine Enterprise will work for rescuing the ro-ro ferry Amanat Shah that sank with 17 covered vans and several motorbikes in the River Padma at Paturia ferry ghat after returning from Daulatdia ferry ghat of Rajbari.

Three trucks managed to reach ashore safely but other covered vans and motorcycles sank in the river.

Meanwhile, an official of BIWTA said they had recovered all the sunken vehicles.

Earlier the government picked salvage ships 'Rustam' and Hamza to recover the sunken ferry Amanat Shah but the efforts went in vain.
