The government has appointed Md Ashequn Nabi Chowdhury as the press minister at the High Commission of Bangladesh in London.

Prior to his appointment for two years announced by the public administration ministry on Wednesday, the journalist, known as Asheq Chowdhury, worked as chief reporter of government-controlled news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS).

Chowdhury, 55, studied Bangla at the Dhaka University. He had covered the economy and business beat at English dailies The Daily Observer, The Financial Express, the New Age and BSS.

He was among the 27 journalists who had been fired ‘on political considerations’ during the government of the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami, bdnews24 reported.

Chowdhury and 14 others were reinstated following a High Court order after the Awami League returned to power in 2009.
