The government is working to prepare an action plan for the construction of eco-friendly residential and commercial buildings and factories.
In this regard, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and EU-SwitchAsia jointly organised a workshop at the Hotel Intercontinental in the capital on Tuesday.
Md Mizanul Haque Chowdhury, Additional Secretary (Climate Change) of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, was present as the chief guest at the workshop.
The event was chaired by Additional Secretary (Development) of the ministry Sanjay Kumar Bhowmik.
The keynote address was delivered by Md. Ashikur Rahman Joarder, Professor of Environment and Energy, Department of Architecture, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology.
Among others, Mir Manjurur Rahman, Chief Architect of the Department of Architecture and Dharitri Kumar Sarkar, Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Environment spoke on the occasion. Representatives of the European Union, the World Bank and various ministries, also took part in the event.
Md Mizanul Hoque Chowdhury said that the present government is committed to reducing carbon emissions in tackling the effects of climate change.
For this, an action plan will be formulated considering the needs of all places and people of the country and the issues of climate change and environmental pollution.
Everyone has to work to create public awareness about this, he underlined.
He said there should be open space and sunlight around the building. All construction materials including bricks, rods and cement must be environmentally friendly. Eco-friendly buildings will be cost-effective and sustainable, he continued.
