DINAJPUR, June 16 : Although Sholakia in Kishoreganj district used to host the country's largest eid congregation in the past, Gor-e-Shaheed Baro Maidan in Dinajpur overtook it in terms of number this year.
This time, the country's largest Eid-ul-Fitr congregation was held at the Gor-e-Shaheed Baro Maidan in the district town Saturday with the participation of around 0.6 lakh devotees, reports UNB.
Shamsul Islam Quashemi, khatib of Dinajpur General Hospital mosque, conducted the jamaat held at 9:20 am.
Jatiya Sangsad Whip Iqbalur Rahim who offered his eid prayers at the ground said around 6 lakh devotees attended the eid congregation. The number of devotees was around 2 lakh last year, said organisers.
High Court Judge Justice Enayetur Rahim, Deputy Commissioner Dr Abu Naim Muhammad Abdus Sabur and Police Super Hamidul Alam, among others, joined the congregation.
Besides, devotees from far and wide, including Bogura, Nilphamari, Thakurgaon and Panchagarh districts, attended the jamaat.
There was stringent security arrangement in place around the venue with the deployment of police and members of Rapid Action Battalion, Border Guard Bangladesh and Ansar to fend off any untoward incident, said the police super.
He also said several CCTV cameras were also installed as part of security.
Gor-e-Shaheed Baro Maidan has a 516-foot wide minaret with 52 domes.
