GOPALGANJ, Feb 09: Farmers of Gopalpur union under Tungipara upazila in the district are getting good benefit from "Lora Broccoli" cultivation in the recent years.
According to Tungipara Upazila Agriculture Office sources, a total of five hectares of land have been brought under Broccoli cultivation this season, where about 100 small and marginal farmers are involved in this farming.
Of them, some farmers are newly involved in farming of the vegetable, sources said.
Robin Biswas (40), a farmer of village Mitrodanga under Gopalpur union in Tungipara upazila told The FE that he cultivated Broccoli on 40 decimals of land of the variety of Broccoli this winter spending Tk 60,000.
The condition of its growth is satisfactory. If the weather remains unchanged, I will get a good benefit from its produce like about Tk 1,60,000, while current market price per piece is Tk 25 to Tk 20 per piece, Robin said.
Bidhyut Kumar Mondal, Sub-Assistant Agriculture Officer (SAAO), Joaria block under Gopalpur union in Tungipara Upazila, told The FE, Broccoli is very profitable because it does not need chemical fertiliser and pesticides.
Natural fertiliser is enough and farmers can easily grow this crop and they can harvest it within a short duration, he said.
Shakti Kirtania (45), a farmer of village Mitrodanga under Tunigpara upazila in the district said, he cultivated Broccoli of the variety on 35 decimals of land where I spent about Tk 52,000 but I have already earned about Tk 0.1 million from its produce. From rest of the crop I may earn Tk 50,000 if the weather condition is remain favourable, Shakti said during a visit to his field.
Samir Kumar Gowshami, Deputy Director (DD) Agriculture, Gopalganj told The FE that Broccoli farming is increasing day by day among the farmers of remote areas in the district. They are becoming benefited from the crop in a short time. The soil in this region is very fertile for farming the crop, the DD added.
Monjila Biswas (40), a female farmer of village Joaria under Gopalpur union in Tungipara Upazila said she cultivated Broccoli on 20 decimals of land near her residence. The growth condition of it is satisfactory. If the weather remains unchanged, I will earn about Tk 90,000 from its produce because current market rate is satisfactory, Monjila said.
