Gazipur cit polls: Hasan Sarkar challenges HC stay order

BNP-backed mayoral candidate Hasan Uddin Sarkar has filed a petition with the Supreme Court challenging a High Court order that stayed Gazipur City Corporation election for three months.

Sagir Hossain Leon, counsel of the BNP mayoral candidate, confirmed the media about the petition on Monday, reports UNB.

However, no hearing on the petition was held with the chamber judge of the Appellate Division as no representative from the Election Commission was present.

Meanwhile, Awami League candidate Zahangir Alam is also going to file an appeal against the HC order.

While talking to reporters at the Supreme Court on Monday, he said he wants the election to be held for the sake of Gazipur's development.

Zahangir's lawyer SM Shafiqul Islam Babu said they will file the appeal on Tuesday morning.

Earlier on Sunday, the HC stayed the Gazipur City Corporation election, which was scheduled to be held on May 15, for three months.

It also issued a rule asking the government to explain as to why the inclusion of six moujas of Dhaka district into GCC should not be declared illegal.

According to UNB, six moujas of Shimulia union (South Boroibari, Domna, Shibrampur, West Panishail, South Panishail and Domnag) of Savar upazila were brought under Gazipur City Corporation area.

The government published a gazette incorporating the moujas on January 16, 2013.

But according to law, GCC was formed with Gazipur and Tongi municipalities.

ABM Azharul Islam Suruj, Shimulia union parishad chairman of Savar, filed the writ on Sunday morning challenging the legality of the gazette as the Election Commission announced the election schedule incorporating the six moujas.

Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda announced the election schedule for Gazipur and Khulna city corporations on March 31.
