Gas crisis hampers city life

Several parts of the capital are experiencing gas crisis with low pressure over the past several days.

Lower quantity of LNG (liquefied natural gas) re-gasification in both the operational FSRUs (floating, storage and re-gasification unit) and lower than expected gas flow from Chevron operated Bibiyana gas field might have squeezed overall natural gas output, said a senior Petrobangla official.

Both the FSRUs were supplying around 700 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) of re-gasified LNG over the past several days, which was around 850 mmcfd before.

Besides, natural gas production from Bibiyana gas field came down to around 1200 mmcfd, which was around 1300 mmcfd earlier, the official justified.

Gas-guzzling industries, household consumers and CNG (compressed natural gas) filling stations are suffering the pinch of the crisis most.

Residents of Mirpur, Mohammadpur, Dhanmodi, Shyamoli, Hajaribag and other nearby areas alleged of having low gas pressure.

Ali Iqbal Md Nurullah, Managing director of state-run Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Ltd (TGTDCL), assured on Sunday that the crisis will be resolved soon.
