A dairy farm named Uttaran had been established at David Company Para of Gaibandha district town for welfare of the transgender people at cordial effort and initiative of superintendent of police (SP).
An inaugural function organised by Gaibandha Zila Police was held on Friday noon to mark the occasion.
Deputy inspector general (DIG) of police of headquarters (Administration and Discipline) Habibur Rahman, also the chairman of Uttaran Foundation (UF), addressed the function as the chief guest.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Gautam Chandra Pal, general secretary of UF Qamrul Hasan Shayak, and panel mayor of Gaibandha Municipality GM Chowdhury Mithu were present at the event as special guests.
With SP Engineer Abdul Mannan Miah in the chair, the function was also addressed, among others, by additional DIG Mazid Ali, additional DIG of RAB-13 Mozammel Haque and transgender leader Mou Khatun.
The speakers underscored the need for changing the socio-economic condition of the transgender people through engaging themselves in income generating activities to build poverty and hunger free society.
The society, as a whole, should come forward with a positive attitude towards the socially excluded people for their coexistence in society with decent livelihoods, they added.
Later, DIG Rahman formally inaugurated the farm by giving five cows and three calves to the third genders.
Gaibandha SP Engineer Abdul Mannan Miah took an initiative to create working opportunities for the transgender people here in a bid to change their lots and requested the UF authority to take steps for them, reports BSS.
Responding the request of the SP, the officials of the UF came to Gaibandha from Dhaka and supported the transgender people with the project.
