Freight vessel’s crew members face charges of culpable homicide

The authorities have brought charges of culpable homicide against eight crew members of Rupshi-9, the freight vessel that crushed a passenger launch in the Shitalakkhya River in Narayanganj.

Babulal Baidya, a deputy director at Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority, started the case on Monday afternoon, said Dipak Chandra Saha, chief of Bandar Police Station.

The accused are the ship’s master Ramzan Ali Sheikh, Nurul Alam, engineer Ariful Islam, Nadim Hossain, Laskar Sumon Hossain, Yasin, Jahidul Islam and Riyad Hossain, according to bdnews24.com.

Babulal said he sought tough punishment of the accused of the crimes. Another case would be filed with a river court, he said.

The charges brought against the crew members of Rupshi-9 include homicide by a sailing ship at a reckless speed, according to police Inspector Mohammad Mohsin.

Moniruzzaman, chief of Narayanganj Sadar River Police, said they would seek a seven-day remand for grilling the accused.

The River Police detained the ship and its crew members at a dockyard in Munshiganj’s Gazaria on Sunday after it fled the scene following the accident.
