Freedom fighters of Bangladesh's Liberation War of 1971 have called on the government to bring all war criminals to justice.
They also renewed their vow to keep the memories of Liberation War martyrs alive.
The greatest sons of the soil make the remarks after paying their respects at the National Monument in Savar on Victory Day on Saturday.
The freedom fighters also called on the younger generation to espouse the ideals of the Liberation War in nation-building.
“The aspiration of the Liberation War was that the people of our country could lead good lives,” freedom fighter Md Alauddin Miah said.
“We did not go to war for our own gain,” he said.
Md Alauddin became a Janata Bank official after the war.
He urged the government to bring those involved in crimes against humanity to justice.
Freedom fighter Md Abdul Hamid, 85, said he could still remember the martyrs who lost their lives during the war.
“I am old, but I never forget to bring flowers to the memorial. We must come together to realise their dreams,” he said.
Sector-2 freedom fighter Shafiul Alam said, “We want the people of our country to take pride in our liberation and spread the ideals of the liberation movement.
“I would also call on the government to ensure the punishment to the war criminals,” he said after he placed flowers at the monument.
Freedom fighter Hafizul Kabir Lenin remembered the operation at Sutrapur Police Station with a gun licensed to his father, reports bdnews24.
“Life is full of such things – things we will not forget to tell others before our time passes,” he said while talking outside the National Monument premises.
He called for the swift trial of war criminals and the execution of their sentences.
