Four to die for killing woman in Sirajganj

The husband of a woman is among four people sentenced to death over her murder in 2011.

Sirajganj Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal handed down the maximum punishment on Tuesday.

The convicts are - Subir Kumar Roy, Sushil Kumar Roy, Sunil Kumar Roy and Monoranjan Roy. Subir was the husband of victim Sumi Roy.

The court also fined them Tk 100,000 each.

According to the prosecution, Subir married to Sumi, daughter of Gopinath Biswas of Tangail, in 1999. Subir used to torture his wife for dowry since their marriage.

On January 12, 2001, Subir along with his family members beat up Sumi after she had refused to bring dowry from his father.

At one stage, they strangled Sumi and tried to pass it on as suicide. But the autopsy report revealed that it was a murder.

Manirul Islam, sub-inspector of Sadar Police Station, filed a case against four people. After examining records and witnesses, Sirajganj Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Fazle Khoda Mohammad Najir handed down the verdict, reports UNB.
