At least four people have died in clashes between rival groups of the Awami League and its youth affiliate Jubo League over a turf war in Kushtia’s Sadar Upazila.
More than 10 others were injured in the violence that erupted at Astanagar village in Jhaudia union around 4:30 pm on Monday, said Mostafizur Rahman Ratan, chief of Islamic University Police Station.
The victims have been identified as Abdur Rahim Malitha, 70, Motiar Rahman, 45, Laltu Mondal, 42, Abul Kashem, 65, reports bdnews24.com.
Abdur Rahim is a supporter of Keramat Ali, president of the Awami League’s local unit and a former chairman of the union council.
Citing witnesses, Mostafizur said Rahim had an altercation with the supporters of Mehedi Hasan, a Jubo League leader and incumbent chairman of the union council.
At one point, Mehedi’s followers attacked Rahim with sharp weapons. After sometime, Keramat’s supporters retaliated and violent clashes broke out.
Mostafizur said police fired tear gas to bring the situation under control.
They also took the injured victims to Kushtia General Hospital where the doctors declared four dead.
As many as 10 injured victims were admitted to the hospital. Two of them were in critical condition, said the hospital’s Resident Medical Officer Ashraful Alam.
No one filed a case over the incident.
Keramat said Rahim was the father of his bodyguard and Mehedi instigated his supporters to kill Rahim.
Mehedi could not be reached for comments.
