Sharing of knowledge and experiences of different cities across the globe, through establishing 'sister city' concept, can help make a better Dhaka, said Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam.

He came up with the observation at a views-exchange meeting with diplomats based in Dhaka, at a city hotel on Monday evening, a statement said.

"The concept (of sister city) will help enhance mutual cooperation among the partners," he said, adding that it would help better footpath, waste and traffic management in the city.

A sister city relationship is a form of agreement between two distinct localities aiming to promote cultural and commercial ties.

Local Government, Rural Development and Co-Operatives Minister Md Tajul Islam attended the meeting as the chief guest, while Public Administration State Minister Farhad Hossain, Deputy Minister of Education Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, and Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen attended the meeting as special guests, among others.

British High Commissioner Robert Chatterton Dickson, Danish Ambassador Winnie Estrup Petersen, Consul of the Republic of Singapore Shila Pellai, Turkish Ambassador Mustafa Osman Turan and Malaysia High Commissioner Haznah binti Md Hashim were present at the meeting, among other diplomats.

Highlighting different initiatives taken by the DNCC, the mayor said it has been implementing different initiatives in line with various long-term plans like Delta plan and Vision 2041 taken by the government.

The DNCC has completed renovation works of 24 parks and playgrounds so far - the corporation also installed smart LEDs in its area.

The mayor sought support from the diplomats who mostly live in the DNCC area.

"We want your support and suggestions so that we can apply the best practices from your cities to Dhaka," he said.
