Flooding maroons 0.1m people in northern, central districts

Flood waters have entered low-lying areas in so far 12 northern and central districts, leaving about 100,000 people marooned.

At least eight rivers are flowing above danger mark, according to a Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre bulletin issued on Saturday.

It said the flood situation may deteriorate in the next one week as fresh areas are likely to be inundated.

The disaster management and relief ministry has asked the authorities in the respective districts to open shelter centres in the flood-affected areas to help the people.

Low-lying areas of Kurigram, Bogura, Gaidabdha, Sirajganj, Rajbari, Pabna, Jamalour, Tangail, Manikganj, Faridpur, Shariatpur and Chandpur districts have been inundated by this time, according to local sources.

“Rainfalls in the upstream areas in India have resulted in swelling of the rivers inside Bangladesh. So, the flood situation is deteriorating and will deteriorate further in the next one week,” Arifuzzaman Bhuiyan, executive engineer of the centre, was quoted by the media as saying.
