Incessant rain as well as water from the upstream of the neighbouring country might cause flood in some districts in next three days, officials predicted.

Most places in the country have been witnessing heavy rain for the last two days under the influence of an active monsoon throughout the region.

Dhaka city witnessed 89 millimetre (mm) of rain in 12 hours from 6.00 am to 6.00 pm on Friday, the highest single-day rain in this year. It caused inundation in many parts of the city.

Water level in many major rivers continued to rise on the day, especially in northern, eastern and south-western regions, according to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) under the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB).

It said major rivers swelled at 75 points across the country. Teesta was about to cross the danger level in Dalia point of Nilphamari on Friday, while Poshur river in Bagerhat started flowing 12 centimetre (cm) above the danger mark.

Besides, water in Brahmaputra-Jamuna and Ganges-Padma basins will be increasing for next three days, the FFWC forecast said.

During the period, there is a chance of flash flood in Teesta, Dhorola, Surama, Kushiara, and some other rivers of northern and north-eastern regions due to rush of water from the hilly states of neighbouring India, it added.

The highest rain of 202 mm was recorded in Cox's Bazar from Thursday evening to Friday morning.

The Met Office (Bangladesh Meteorological Department) forecasted heavy to moderate rain in most places across the country in next 48 hours.

Meanwhile, heavy rain on Friday turned many parts of the capital into swamps, affecting normal life. Main streets, lanes and by-lanes in many areas were partially or fully submerged, while waste and dirt came out of sewers.

Rainwater inundated many roads in areas like Mirpur, Mohammadpur, Mirpur Road, Dhanmondi 27, Karwan Bazar, Tejturibazar, Monipuripara, Indira Road, Farmgate, Green Road, Rajarbag, Paltan, Nayapaltan, Motijheel, Jurain, and many parts in Old Dhaka.

In some places, water even entered the ground floor of buildings, causing immense sufferings to their dwellers.
