Flood situation worsens due to onrush of water, rainfall

Continuous onrush of water from upstream as well as heavy rainfall further escalated flood in char and other low-lying areas in the northern and central regions on Monday.

At least 12 people were killed in the flood in just 24 hours, raising the death toll to 79 in the three-week long deluge, according to government data.

However, heavy rain also caused inundation in most low-lying areas of the city on Monday.

Many places in the city went under waist-deep water causing immense sufferings for the dwellers.

Dhaka witnessed 84 mm rainfall in 24 hours from Sunday evening to Monday evening, according to the Met Office.

However, rising trend of water level at most points of the Padma basin like Pankha, Rajshahi and Hardinge Bridge were recorded in the past 24 hours, according to Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC).

The water level in the Padma rose further by two centimetre (CM) and five cm at Pankha in Chapainawabganj and at Rajshahi stations respectively during the past 24 hours.

Arifuzzaman Bhuiyan, executive engineer of Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC), said the water level in Atrai River increased by 47 cm at Mohadevpur point in Naogaon district.

The Gur River was also flowing 57 cm above the danger mark at Singra in Natore with rise of four cm afresh, he said.

At least 4,024 people have been affected by diarrhoea, skin disease, snakebite, eye inflammation and bronchitis during three weeks of flooding in the low-lying areas, according to the directorate general of health (DGOH).

The directorate also reported 79 deaths from drowning, diarrhoea, snakebite and lighting during the period in which 12 people died from Sunday noon to Monday noon.

The northern, northeastern and central parts of the country experienced two rounds of floods from Jun 30 to Jul 19.

Around 2.4 million people were affected in 18 districts.

Of the 101 monitoring stations for rivers, the water level had risen in 66 stations on Monday.

Water in 13 rivers was flowing above the danger level at 24 points, said FFWC.

The Brahmaputra-Jamuna river may remain stable on Monday, according to a 10-day forecast by FFWC.

The flood situation in Kurigram, Bogura, Gaibandha, Sirajganj, Jamalpur, Tangail and Manikganj districts will remain almost unchanged over the next 24 hours.

However, the water level in Brahmaputra-Jamuna may rise again after Tuesday and reach its peak by Jul 27.

The flood situation in the seven aforementioned districts may deteriorate again. Floods could last until the end of July.

The water level of Dhaleshwari river at Jagir station in Manikganj may cross the danger level over the next five days, said FFWC.

Water level at Goalondo Point in Rajbari district, Bhagyakul point in Munshiganj district and Sureshwar point in Shariatpur district may remain static over the next 48 hours and then rise again.

The flood situation in the lower parts of these districts may remain steady for the next 10 days.

The water levels of the rivers around Dhaka may also rise in the next few days.

 Balu river at Demra point, Turag river at Mirpur point and Dhaleshwari river at Rekabi Bazar point may cross the danger levels in the next seven days which might cause flooding in the city.

The water level of Shitlakshya river in Narayanganj may cross the danger level within the next five days.

Meanwhile, heavy rain turned many parts of the capital into water-bodies on Monday, paralysing normal life and creating a traffic chaos in many places.

Key roads, lanes and bylanes were partially or fully submerged in those areas.

At places, human waste and dirt came out of sewers and made life difficult for people.

The Met office said rain might occur in the city in the next three days, said Met Office.

The office recorded 84 mm rain between 6:00am Sunday and 6:00pm Monday in Dhaka.

The city witnessed 65 mm rain just in six hours on Monday, said the Met Office.
